The Black Sea Interconnection (BSI) project launched today will build a regional research and education network among South Caucasus countries and link them to GEANT2, the high bandwidth, pan-European research network. This flagship project is the largest of its kind in the region and will allow Caucasian research communities to participate effectively in joint research and educational activities with the rest of Europe. The European Commission provides ˆ1.4 million funding for the BSI project within 7th Framework Programme for R&D.

On June 27-30, 12th working session of “Virtual Silk Highway” project of NATO Science Program and 2nd meeting of OCCASION Project were held in Baku.
The goals of meeting were: improvement of realization of mentioned projects, discussion of projects’ components for achieving the more efficient Internet provision for higher education and scientific institutions of the South Caucasus and Central Asia countries. The meetings were attended by the representatives of the “Virtual Silk Highway” and OCCASION projects from Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. The meetings were also attended by the specially invited guests from Great Britain, Belgium, Germany and Poland.
Mr. Ali Abbasov, Minister of Communications and Information Technologies, Mr. Misir Mardanov, Minister of Education and Mr. Rasim Aliquliyev, Director of Institute of Information Technologies of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences made a statement at the opening ceremony of the events.

Workshop on Network Management" held in Chisinau, Moldova.
Dr. Elchin Aliyev made a speech on "3C model for ICT
Development" theme.

| In the framework
of NATO Partnership program in 2003 has been concluded the
Project on Distance Education between Indiana University and
AzRENA – IU/AzRENA (AZ01). The main object of the Project
is training of 5 qualification specialists in DE field for
organization full-scale process of DE in Azerbaijan. AzRENA
carries out its activity as the base centre of DE in the regional
level and planning future involvement of all universities
of the Azerbaijan Republic into this project.
Under the IU/AzRENA Project the project group
form Indiana University, leading by Dr. Thomas Duffy have
been visited Azerbaijan form May 16 to June 5, 2004. The objects
of their visit were realization of training of 5 instructors,
analysis of DE field in Azerbaijan, establishment of personal
contacts and preparation for carrying out the E-Learning Symposium
2004 on May 25.
From June 20 to August 7, 2004 5 instructors
from AzRENA Distance Education Centre took lessons in Indiana
University, Bloomington, USA.
Having finished summer session, each instructor
has been granted by the Certificate of passing this session.

technology and pedagogocal bases" which was successfully
held in Baku from September 20 to September 25 is finished.
We hope, that this Seminar was interesting and useful for

Carrying out of this Seminar will facilitate

Indiana University and AzRENA - IU/AzRENA (AZ01), questions
