The proposed ANW is a continuation of the series of NATO policy workshops, which started in Budapest (1993) and in the last eight years are held bi-annually, mainly in the Central Asian and Caucasus region.

The aim of the Policy workshop is to increase the level of harmony among the various network policies at national and international levels. These workshops provide a forum for users and policy-makers and those responsible for the scientific infrastructure to acquire a better understanding of the need for coordination in the planning and development of research networks.

The essential idea behind the proposed Policy Workshop in Baku, Azerbaijan is the concept that the enactment, the existence and the successful operation of a NREN, as a center of excellence for research, education, knowledge generation and dissemination is one of the major factors for the overall development each society.

As a result of the Baku ANW, we hope that the national policies for the sustainable NREN development and for providing the national information security will be put high on the agenda of the involved governments. The spirit of national and international cooperation, between various local stakeholders as well as with the international organizations will be demonstrated and used in future for more effective usage of the available resources.
